Paper Dress

The dress' shape was inspired by two buildings: Haas House and Marriott Marquis. The Paper was patterned (see previous post).

Haas House

Marriott Marquis

The silver squares are shaped like the glass/windows from the Haas House building. I used silver, laminate paper cut outs to achieve the glossy, mirrored effect.

The final touch, was the collar. It was made with voile fabric zig-zag stitched on the machine to create the shapes seen on the windows at the Marriott Marquis building. Again silver paper was added to the gaps in the stitching to resemble the windows.

Building inspired patterns

For one of my subject options, I picked Fashion and Surface.
The option project was to create an 'Adornment'. We were also given starting points, an architectural movement and an artist.

I was given Paul Klee and the movement was Post-Modernism.

Looking at some of the buildings I researched and one piece in particular by Paul Klee (Ad Parnassum), I made some marks. These marks were made with printing, oil based, inks on glass, rolled out and then scraped away with card revealing some of the glass which made it look like windows.

Taking sections from each sheet of marks I made, I created some symmetrical patterns on Photoshop. I did this by copying the image several times but flipping it horizontally and vertically where they met.

This pattern is one which most resembles a building, I love the detail and the lines created in what one might say are windows.

Very similar to the first one, however I used the initial image in a different orientation.

Last but not least, this pattern is one in which I managed to add colours to. The colours came from Paul Klee's colour palette. This will be the print I will use on my paper dress.

'Music to my eyes' final piece

In illustration, I think I really expressed myself, and worked quickly and efficiently to create a final piece. I tried out different techniques such a simple line drawing, spray painting, collage and even photoshop. The song 'Quiver a littler' was really captured in it.

Ana Jaren - illustrator

Ana Jaren is an artist I've come across whilst researching for the 'Music to my eyes' project. She's a freelance illustrator from Spain, who seems to be heavily inspired by people and tattoos (much like me).

Here are some of the designs I really like:

I love her use of negative space and background she uses. The Sailor Jerry style of tattoos is something I love, so I really relate to the artist.

'Just My Type'

As part of the "Just My Type project I had to experiment with type, in order to create an alphabet inspired by one of these words:
Geometry, Layers, Tactile, Manipulated and Reflect.

For the geometry experiment, I tried cutting out bits of paper whilst inserting bits of newspaper and black bits of paper each shape was either cut into straight lines or circles, which is where the geometry comes in.

For tactile, I used buttons to create the letters of the alphabet, as well as this i experimented with hot glue to create the letters too. These, were made so that the alphabet was textures and interesting to touch.

For reflect, I was a little uninspired. I simply mirrored the letters using mirroring lines.

For manipulate, I 'manipulated' bits of wire to create letters. the outcome wasn't as neat as I would have liked it to be, but it's interesting to see how you can manipulate things, shaping them into what you want/need.

For layers, I played around with 'post-it' notes layering them together, so that you could reveal different fonts for each letter as you lift each post-it note.  I also used thread to map out the shape of the letter 'A'. And then cut out letters on different pages, layering them up.

My final piece was mostly inspired by the geometry aspect of it, although it could be said that it was also inspired by layers as collage was also a method used.

Work Development / Analysis and Artist Research

John Virtue was my original inspiration for the large piece I created. I like his work because it is quite dark and abstract but it is still clear on what each piece is displaying. Here are some images I selected from his work which I like best, but also which fits best with the project Land and See.

Taking those images into consideration and as inspiration I wanted to do my take on some of his techniques, using some of my own sketches found in my sketchbook as a starting point.

I started with a blank piece of white paper and some drawing ink, creating a very dark atmosphere: most of the paper was covered in black ink, however I didn't just paint the white sheet black, when doing this used the ink to carve out some of the main shapes of the image, such as the hills and the sharp line which separates land from sky. To start adding tone, I then went on to use white acrylic paint mixed with some black ink which allowed me to give the illusion of shadow and light creating the lake and the sky and some of the grass. The piece itself was layered quite heavily with ink and paint to give it more of a texture like John Virtue's work.

The final outcome didn't turn out quite as abstract and dark as the artists because I found it very difficult to achieve the right shapes  and the right interpretation of the landscape in an uncontrolled manner, as I have a tendency to express things the way I see them. Despite not ending up with the affect I originally wanted the piece to, i thoroughly enjoyed working on the piece and it does incorporate John Virtue as my inspiration but also my own twist to it, which I like.

Polaroid Exercise - First Entry

In today's workshop we had to create a new blog! Ta Da!

Our first task was to take twelve, and only twelve, pictures related to specific words given.
The words were: line, contrast, bulge, narrow, awkward, flow, awkward, flow, connect, direct, below, noise, blue and far.

I have since chosen two of my favourite pictures from the twelve taken.

Line was one the two I liked best.

I think this one was successful because I captured the lines within the image in almost a symmetrical way which worked nicely against the uneven patterns created on the wood grains.

I also really like the dullness of the colours in it, it is almost monochromatic which links in nicely with my work from the land and see project so far.

Contrast was the second image which I liked best.

I really liked this one because, interestingly, it is the opposite of the first one I chose. There's a lot of contrast between the two. The colours in the are very vibrant and it is clear that the blue packaging does not belong on the green grass.
